When I saw that the Silver Screen Society was going to feature the first Batman movie I had to jump aboard. Batman holds a special place in my heart, as I’m sure he does for a lot of different people. The original relationship between Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson is one that I knew I had to capture digitally.
The concept began simply with watching the movie and looking for iconic phrases and visuals. When Keaton holds Nicholson up and their determination is almost palpable, I knew I’d found my moment. Building off of this scene I drew out a lot of different opportunities, many of them ranged from very complex to much more simple. I finally landed on Batman facing off against the Joker and using a slightly twisted Joker face as the background to emphasize the insane, twisted mind of Batman’s best and most interesting nemesis.
“Illustrating the Joker is the greatest experience a person can have short of a fresh MLT, mutton, lettuce, tomato, where the mutton is nice and lean...”
It was a little hurtful in the beginning but you get used to it.
When a creepy joker face appears just go with it.
I only needed a good excuse to justify my neediness.
